It really speaks to what a people unified by a common cause and vision of how the world ought to work can accomplish, when only centuries before they were illiterate savages. They were Muslims, and they glorified Islam.
I don't agree with the values of Islam in the slightest, but the fact that they had values at all made capable of greatness. I don't have to hate me neighbor to love my family, just as I don't need to hate other peoples to love my own race and culture.
That's to say nothing of much of modern Islam, though. They've once again descended into savagery and the wrong kind of extremism.
