Well the class isn't just C++, it's object-oriented programming so maybe that has something to do with why we have to use Linux. That and they have been stressing to us that we cannot just be programmers with a piece of paper, we have to be "engineers" who can adapt to any new operating system, software or piece of hardware that is thrown at us.
Most people don't even use an IDE desu, I usually just write the code using a text editor (right now I am trying out Sublime Text, but professor recommend gedit).
