But at that time kings and lords were trained from childhood in fighting and melee combat. Being women, they wouldn't have had any such training, and women being naturally weaker than men, the contribution they would have made on the battlefield versus the risk of the leader being killed, would have made it pretty stupid for them to have been in the front lines.
