They were a bunch of raggamuffins who were going up against the premier naval power in the world, a European power that could use that navy to ferry a world class army over to crush any uppity colonists. They suffered all kinds of deprivations. They lost most of their battles. But they won their last one, and that was the war equivalent of checkmate in chess.
Also, the U.S. had no business winning the rematch (War of 1812). And that, too, didn't go America's way. It was more or less a tie. But there was a peace treaty only because both nations were simply tired out and were not amicable to continuing to shovel loads of money into an unwinnable war.
At that time, England was very powerful. But America was so BIG, so large a land mass. Even at 13 states. A thousand mile coastline and an interior that stretched halfway to the Mississippi and touched the Great Lakes. Had Britain won, she would have gone broke garrisoning the place in the years after. It would've used up all her resources.
