I think that assuming what's happening in OP's life doesn't do him good. They shouldn't need a girlfriend to make themselves feel better/improve, but I will say it's a good opportunity to focus more on yourself.
On that note, OP, you aren't alone, and there are plenty of things that you can do. I know it seems like you're alone, and trust me, I feel it all the time too, but maybe just trying to learn acceptance can be your first step? Accepting that we are all alone and that our brains are too good for our own goods. Accepting that people may change feelings, and trying to work with the construct of relationships.
I don't know, this is just stuff that I've been thinking about as well, and while I do feel lonely a lot, it's given me time to refine what it means to be myself by putting my all into my school work/interests. I try not to think about them as much...
