open your mind to style.

all graffiti writers started with handstyles, tagging, and bombing the streets. this is where style comes in.

I'd suggest you watch some videos from the channel Tags and Throws on youtube. Great channel, it gives insight to the mind of the writer, and how each person develops that style.

Once you are into graffiti for a while you start to recognize the way people stylize certain letterforms, and tags/pieces get easier to decipher. Also sometimes legibility is really not the goal, the fact that they happen to be letters is ancillary to the visual being expressed.

Not him, but it says "mode." Like I said earlier, if you write graffiti for a while you can recognize familiar letter shapes and the ways people tend to stylize them, so a lot of pieces get easy to read.
