The fall of communism was just a few years before that and the whole aesthetics of decaying building, nature retaking ( of course not on the same level as in russia ) and the days with my cousins going through nature from the morning till the evening, made a life time impression on me. Combined with the polish girls and a certain sense of freedom, i love seeing everything that resembles that.
And yes playing Stalker years later was something special.
