If you're expecting another lotr or the hobbit then you're not going to enjoy it one bit
If you're expecting a book that tells a few important stories of middle earth and let's in on some of the lore - something that's structure more is like the bible (a series of stories in chronological order that are connected, but don't require reading in that order), then you'll probably enjoy it a bunch.
I just started reading it myself and the introduction is a massive infodump about the valar (kinda like the gods/angles of middle earth), so I was kinda turned off at first. After getting through the first couple of chapters though it really started reading nicely.
I hear that a bunch of people enjoy the stuff in the second half of the book more than the first half as well.
