This was the initial version, but here's what I think will be the final iteration. Most notable change is the hollow circles on the clock indicating when the alarm is set to. If anyone knows how to make unlock animations not look super shitty and flicker between states when they start up, that would be nice to know. I kept trying to add a coming-online animation and it just never looked any good.

Here's my go at it.
The highlighted text changes based on the album art. I'm having some issues where it doesn't grab a color and just shows code instead. Can I somehow use an 'if then' statement to fix that?

Try different wallpapers to make those icons pop because the one you have now does make it hard to focus. Maybe something flat with subtle texture, grey cityscapes, grainy night papes.

Big improvement, but the colours of your dock don't jive with the rest of the theme. Keeping Horizontal margins consistent between the widgets and the dock icons would help, same with using either white icons with black logos or outline icons like the weather widget uses

Here's the mockup I made so should I give up on trying to make the non-square window fit the low-poly background and just square it? I like the text heavy look I want everything at a glance. All textboxes are with the longest text that I should expect

Is it really a terrible idea to try and base your homescreen customization around an image such as this ? Especially when you're a noob ? Or maybe I should look for matching an image with an already defined particular style and not the other way around ?

What are we using for launchers these days? Is Nova still the most popular? I've tried it, but had some issues with my Pixel 3.

Specifically, the recent apps function is tied to the pixel app drawer, so I have no way of using it without having 2 seperate app drawers to manage / look at.

Also if I did decide to just use the google app drawer over the nova one, it feels a lot slower and responsive, and doesn't have the kind of "peek" capabilities where the drawer opens progressively with my gesture it usually would using the pixel launcher.

Any suggestions?

Most times the stock launcher will be faster than any third party one. What you could do is remove the gesture for the Nova one and then getting rid of any icons that open up the Nova app drawer. Could you share a screenshot of your recents?

So your recent apps on nova don't update unless you use the Google app drawer? I want to help but u need some clarification because as a non pixel user what you're saying makes absolutely no sense to me - as I understand it, the nova launcher should add to the recent apps based on the apps you open while using nova, when you use the nova launcher that should be the only thing active and available for you to launch apps.

This is what it looks like. Swiping up from the bottom a little pulls up recent apps. A "full" swipe up opens the app drawer. I can scroll left and right through the recent apps (in the middle of the screen) and resume using them right where I left off.

The issue isn't that the nova drawer doesn't update my apps. If I solely used the nova launcher, I wouldn't be able to access that feature of the phone. That being said, I very well could gesture for the recent apps to open, but then I also have to look at the ugly google app drawer. Part of the reason I'm bothering using a different launcher is to hide the ugly search bar that they're forcing on me with the android 10 update. Hope that gives a better idea of my situation!

Also, this is the first issue the pixel has given me, and it seems to be more of an android 10 thing. Everything was perfect until I updated the other day. I've just never really clicked with samsung hardware.

its most likely all done with KLWP, and since its a recreation the font and icons are most likely taken from directly from W98.

This seems like a pretty basic 2 page setup with a bunch of FABs. Lots of scroll and fade animations.
All the text they used comes from pre-loaded klwp formulas, I think.

You have to redo your placement because it uses a different method for spacing since it's a container. You could do a full screen rectangle and make it invisible but you would still need to manually copy over each of your settings.

You can try your best to incorporate clock/date etc. in to the signs, which I don't think will work too well as the signs are very small. You best bet is minimalistic boxes/shapes with your content inside.

You can skew perspective of elements in klwp, I don't think that's the issue - but usability will be terrible because the signs will be way too small on a phone.

I think ai'll finally get to it this week. Been stuck with my current setup for almost half a year now and every time I try to change it, I come up with extremely elaborate designs and just give up because they always look better in my head then in reality.
I might just use yours as inspiration. As for feedback: I'd change the disappearing animation for the apps, looks a bit janky. Maybe have them fade out one by one, when they're past the X or something like that.

Yeah, the pape is pretty dope. But it starts losing its charm once you look at it every day for months.

The two text elements are jumping all over the place, especially the battery one. Is it possible to lock the corners of the text in place, so the first letter of the time always stays in the same place and the last letter of the battery always stays in the same place?
I think the problem with the battery is, that the text position changes depending on length and the rotation is applied afterwards.

try changing the anchoring point in the position tab, or you could apply the rotation as an animation state with no activating condition. if you do the latter the position of the element in the preview and on your actual screen probably wont match up though, which is a bit of a pain to work with but otherwise it works just as good.

Thanks, it's still a work in progress but I'm mostly just working on some simple animations, so the final product shouldn't look much different. A cool advantage of the colour scheme that I didn't realize is that when my phone switches to night mode and makes everything slightly orange, the rice still looks decent.
Really like your animation by the way, had a similar idea for a long time, but never got to making it. I personally don't really like the font too much, but it does fit the theme, so I wouldn't change it.

i have it intentionally scaled up on my screen just because I don't like much empty space. but as far as things go, i'm not having problems getting the bars confused or pressing the wrong shortcuts. as far as colors go, they're easy to look at and contribute to a feeling of simplicity.

The album art is stored on my SD card, and is embedded into the .mp3 or whatever extension file.
KLWP doesnt show the album art.

Done those layout changes but I'm still using material icons for the music and networking controls, which are annoying to get right in terms of positioning and scaling. I'll swap those out next. Also want to have more apps accessible so I'll fuck around with some animations for that next.

In my opinion the hardest part about KLWP is actually finding a good idea for a homescreen which isn't a problem if you just copy from others for starters.
Animations can be a bit tricky and working efficiently can take a while, but you'll get that down after some time.
Other then that, just trial and error. The app is incredibly self explanatory and you could easily do a homescreen like that in an evening.

Just watched it. Holy fuck what a good movie. I kinda knew beforehand that mental illness would be a theme, so that didn't take my by surprise as much as it might if I had expected a run of the mill origin story.
Also very visually pleasing, I loved the colour grading and camera work.
The only things dragging it down are a few pet peeves I had with some scenes and the whole media shitstorm and "meme community" that built around it.

This is what I wrote for the colors in KWGT. If you look at the bitmap pallet presets you can use them to pull a color from the album art. Font is product sans in case you were curious.

As much as it's a fascinating blend of awfulness, I'm saddest about removing the clock. That was the part I was most proud of, and they just had to replace it with a standard ass clock.

It has to be trolling right, considering there's two clocks, two connection indicators, two battery indicators, 2 (or 3?) temperature indicators, and the nav buttons overlapping the status text. I refuse to believe anyone did all that for any other reason.

My first suggestion would be to include mine.
Joke's aside, I'm not sure there is really much to do with the format, I personally think in terms of quantity vs quality the review for #177 is a nice balance.
It seems more professional then just some dude flicking through the thread, but shows off more homescreens than the most recent one for example. Also having comparisons of different versions of the rice is nice, where applicable.
Also properly explaining what exactly makes a rice trash is very helpful as compared to just calling it trash and moving on.
I bet if you really wanted to, you guys could put together a video along the lines of "Top 10 whacky ideas to make your first rice less trash" to cover some basics for beginners or whatever, with some positive and negative examples (is that a saying in English?) but that sounds like it could turn out to be quite a bit of effort and I assume you record those reviews for fun more than anything else.
So most importantly, just keep going. The videos obviously won't get much traction but I think they really help.

Though just by watching the video I already found a lot of things I could improve. I didn't like the calendar screen from the get go and changes it multiple times since, currently looks like this.
On the homescreen itself I think the dots might be to cramped and I should bump the padding up a bit and scale the circles down a bit. I at first liked the asymmetric lopsided look it had with the big circles, but the longer I use it the more I think I should change it.
Also the music controls don't really line up with anything and when you just look at a static image of the expanded album art it sits in a bit of a weird spot compared to the stuff on the right.
If I find time I might fix it in the coming days.
