Image upscaling

I'm making the switch to 4k
There are a lot of wallpapers I have that simply do not exist in higher resolutions. If I could, I would upscale them. The GIMP method really isn't satisfactory.
Are there even 'satisfactory' methods?

I tried letsenhance.io. My impression is that it makes quite good upscaling outputs on anything resembling vectors stuff - simple wallpapers with no color mix. Real life photos is a hit and miss though. It does a very well job on some, while meh on others. I found it produces a kind of oily effect when colors mix too much
