Monasticism was with Christianity since the beginning. What started in the 3rd century was communal monasticism and the beginning of monastic "rules" (such as the later Rule of Benedict). Before that time, monasticism was eremitic (that is to say, solo or solitary, not communal).
St. Paul says "you who are alive today [will witness the return of the Christ]" and he expected the eschaton would happen soon. This is why he discouraged people from getting married and encouraged celibacy, saying it would be better if all men were like him (celibate, unmarried, asexual). He was was wrong.
His theology presents a total break from the pre-Rabbinic Judaism of his time. It is more consistent with extremist, minority, anti-Temple factions like Essene Judaism or Enochian Judaism. It is also interesting to note that, like Paul, the Essenes and Enochians tended toward being anti-cosmic, aescetic and anti-sex.
As for using the Rape of Nanjing against the Japanese people as a whole, you really are a fucking idiot. That was a crime committed by the Imperial Japanese military of the time, which was not under civilian control. The Japanese people, under a military and imperial dictatorship cannot be held responsible for such war crimes.
Every nation and peoples on Earth are responsible for war crimes. Homo sapiens sapiens (that's our species) survived because of the genocides it committed against other hominids in the past. China has committed war crimes and mass murders, so has the United States (see the conquest of the Philippines, for one example). Yet I don't hold Americans personally responsible for past war crimes.
