This was mostly due to Epicurus aspiring to reason that death is not to be feared in case there is or isn't an afterlife. He considered gods "indifferent", i.e. they do not care about man or the world of man (e.g. because there's evil in the world).
As such, the quote is not stupid, in my opinion, but it seems to often be used to misrepresent Epicurus or epicureanism.
