This is after Melkor and Ungoliant escaped Valinor after fucking shit up for everyone. Melkor had promised Ungoliant whatever she wanted in return for her help, but when she demanded the Silmarils Melkor had just stolen he refused. So she attacked him, and he screamed in terror so loud his Balrogs heard him thousands of miles away and rushed over to fend her off.
As for sources, aside from those you listed, there's "The Unfinished Tales" and "The History of Middle-earth". Most recently, there was "The Children of Hurin", "Beren and Luthien", and "The Fall of Gondolin".
The last three are basically major expansions on three of the key chapters in the Silmarillion. "The Children of Hurin" is the closest to a "traditional narrative", expanding on the story of Turin Turambar. "Beren and Luthien" and "The Fall of Gondolin" serve both to share excerpts of the (unfinished) narratives and verses telling the events' stories, as well as Christopher Tolkien giving a more... biographical? context, explanation, and timeline about their development by his father. "Beren and Luthien" is also told more in poetry than prose.
