But to name an example; There are many, many stories of Space Marine Chapters that, while not even remotely close to turn chaos, still turn away from the Imperium for it's many faults and failures. One of these could easily turn their services to the Tau in exchange for technology and neutral space to work with. And, given the Tau track record of slowly turning people to their cause (see Water Cast) one thing leads to another and, before they know it, said chapter is now fully wearing not only Tau tech, but their colors as well. Or it could be a single stray marine that got an offer he could not resist from the Tau. The mental conditioning the marines go through is far from perfect so something as simple as this can also be true.
(*)Purists are usually angry at that pic because it implies a deep control of the Tau to either a single Space Marine or a full chapter under Tau control.
