in modern america only a completely retarded woman would ever be a prostitute. there's so many other options available even if you want to be a lazy whore and sell your body that are far safer, easier, and just better overall. if you don't want to do that, you can just get a normal job- because you can get any job a man can get.

however in a traditional patriarchal society, women can't just go get a job. there would also be no onlyfans or twitch to farm simp money from. historically, women who lost their husbands to war or illness had very few options. few could remarry, if they were still young and childless. in some cases they would have support from their family, or from friends, as a widow with children. but many were not so lucky. women who can't remarry, already have children, are poor, women like this often turned to prostitution as a way to keep themselves and their kids from starving. they just had no other options, which is pretty much a consequence of living in a traditional society where they can't just work and nobody wants to marry them for being used goods.
