I think it's because they are the ultimate "liminal space" in the sense of being a transitionary or in-between of different locations. The stations are the only part that the average person spends any time in, while everything in between is just an off-limits footnote of a space that exists in the passengers' windows for a split second, whereas looking at images like this feels odd and almost profound, like you are taking in the beauty or at least all the details of a space that always exists there, but is never thought about by anyone, really.
