>>7969810slavery was allowed in the US before and after the revolution, true. the gadsden flag was designed by a slave owner and profiteer, true. the gadsden flag represents freedom despite these facts? true as it reflects a confederated struggle towards self determination. the founding fathers fought for a loose communion of american states and as they were hard pressed to agree on anything, their disagreements on slavery slid (to put it lightly) as what united them was self determination; therefore, the issue would be solved 100 years later. Still, once the articles of confederation (the strictest interpretation of self determination) proved unpractical, many of the same men would see that the constitution (the compromise towards the question of government) placed checks on slavery and its institution.
thus, the argument that the flag stands for slavery is extremely loose. yes the people who created and carried it had tolerances towards slavery, but their uniting factor was not slavery; 13 groups of people came together to fight for an opportunity to be each other's neighbor free of the will of the head and his body across an ocean - agreeing on everything was not their goal, so they didn't. seeing as to how the entity they fought to create no longer exists, and upon committing to unification all of them fought harder to assert their wills, the gadsden flag is free of their collective legacy and solely represents their will towards self-determination
