I get where you're coming from, but I like the lone, travelling gunslinger aesthetic. Not the "guy who shot cherokees for money" side of cowboys.
I can't really think of a single historic symbol like that who didn't do something heinous at some point. I think I can be proud of my aztec ancestors while recognizing that human sacrifice and slavery are bad.
