>>7964536No they could not you nigger. You had to be celibate to actually join which is why most families donated wealth as they could not afford to do that with their other obligations. The order was large so obviously there would have been laity that worked much of the other stuff surrouding being a military order riches than some countries, but when people say 'Templar' they are talking about the warrior monks.
Chastity in fact does not just mean 'sex with spouse', although that in Christianity is expected as the bare fucking minimum to not go to hell, but it is actually the repression and control of all sexual desire, down to it only being done for procreation, and not taking pleasure in the act either. The extreme chastity with married couples can be seen more recently in the Victorian views of sexuality, and those considered the most chaste would have been completely celibate and virginal nuns.
Chastity was and is not simply a 'yes/no' based on whether you are committing adultery or not. For example people who are extremely temperate would eat nothing but bread and water and fast, not simply eschew fancy meals, those who were most succesful at cultivating charity would give everything away and become a traveling aesetic like Christ.
And the Templars were so strict on sexuality, you weren't even suppoed to EVER be naked - even when you washed you were supposed to keep your clothing on as seeing yourself naked even was supposed to possibly arouse lust or thinking about sexuality or women.
