Not just the buildings, cars (physical things) but the people and their mindsets, the whole psychology of those ages. Their society and paradigm has been greatly exterminated - the pictures of the environment in which they inhabited give that feel of disbelief and dysphoria because of that. These snapshots represent that spirit which has been snatched away. Sure you could build a complete physical replica and fill it with people looking like them in their clothing, they do that all the time in films; but it wouldn't be it would it, wouldn't even feel or look like it even though it did.
