You're showing the image with more pixels rather than less. So more detail that was originally there can be seen more clearly, instead of dissolving into a soup of color because there's not enough pixels in the image to display the detail.
It's the same thing with any image.
Obviously, things like screen size, and distance from it come into play, but more pixels generally means a clearer image and finer details.
