Egypt's population is packed in around the nile, and the nile delta. That has to make food for them as well. As the population as grown, the amount of land you can actually fucking live in has not, which means cairo has grown like a middle-aged mom who never took off her goth gear, and now it's all squishing over the top of her boots and coming through the mesh halter.
I dunno the reasons for its growth specifically, aside from world population growth trends overall, but the reason cairo is so absolutely rammed is that there just isn't anywhere to go. You need water, you need food, and the rest of the country is a motherfucking desert drier than a nun on sunday.
