The program used to make the thumbnail is unaware of ICC profiles, so it just shows the colors as-is by wrongly assuming it's sRGB.
Your browser, on the other hand, knows how ICC profiles work, so it applies the profile and the colors appear as intended.
Unlike JPEG, PNG can embed ICC profiles directly, so it doesn't get stripped as part of the EXIF metadata.

When opened, picrel should appear as purple/black at the top and green/white at the bottom.
If it shows up as some rainbow plaid, as in the thumbnail, then either I fucked up or it doesn't work anymore.
