Sho is a young college student who became obsessed with American history after reading about Admiral Perry in school and Nakahama Manjiro, first Japanese to visit America and write about it. He decides he wants to have a career in diplomacy, specializing in the US, and goes to America for a couple of semesters to study there and immerse himself in the culture.
His roommate is John. John moved into the dorm room the day before Sho arrived and decorated it the way he wanted to. Sho is offput, to say the least, to find a sign on the door welcoming him to "The Swamp" and finding the dorm room decorated with camouflage netting hanging from the ceiling, pictures of deer and girls with guns on the walls, and a package of venison jerky on his desk as a welcome gift from his new roommate. Sho is uncomfortable with what he thinks is some sort of redneck from Deliverance, but soon warms to John when it becomes clear that John is good people. The first couple of episodes focus on cultural and language barriers, but both roommates are willing to work through them and become genuine friends. John starts inviting Sho to tag along on various outdoor activities, like hiking or camping in a national park for the weekend, and Sho quickly becomes an enthusiast, taking John's advice on proper clothing, equipment, etiquette, etc.
Then John asks if Sho wants to go hunting some time.
