Step 1 - learn hiragana/katakana
Step 2 - install yomi-chan
Step 2 - flashcards until you learn about 2k words, then you can drop it if you want to or keep accumulating vocabulary. Look for "core" decks, either Core10k and interrupt when you want, or Core2.3k because this is what young folks use these days;
Step 3 - in parallel with step 2, read Tae Kim's grammar guide. 60 lessons, should take you just 2 months if you read one a day;
Step 4 - Read and watch things every day. One episode of anime, one chapter of mango, just stay in touch with the language;
Step 5 - Once you're advanced enough to understand most stuff, talk to Japs.
Remember that you do stuff daily.
I spent 7 years walking in circles before I buckled down, installed Anki and started learning for real. Took me 3 years to reach N1 with 2h/day of study and I wasn't studying very efficiently.
