Part 1 - Several hundred years before the story begins:
Need and Doubt cover the light -
The princess Need, daughter of the Unnamed King, finds herself always hungry. By some supposed curse of unknown origin, her hunger seems to grow even as she eats. Her father rations her meals and does his best to teach her self-control, but she suffers for it.
The princess Doubt is the first daughter of the Outer Wall. Having a seductive magical aura she seems charismatic and genuine, when in actuality her behavior is transparently malicious and sociopathic. Where she shows obvious indifference - or even cruelty - others are deluded into seeing a mutual attraction (i.e. "I love her, and she loves me back"). She meets with Need in secret, and traps her under this spell.
Over three of these secret meetings, Need is persuaded to kill her father so she can rule the kingdom alongside Doubt (who promises to let her eat as much as she wants). One night, she approaches him from behind and stabs him in the back.
In the center of his castle (a sprawling, labyrinthine structure later known as the Palace Complex) a pillar of divine light shines upon a prism, which directs a holy aura outward across the kingdom. This light holds back the approaching Outer Wall, and is detestable to Doubt. With Need's help, she smashes the prism and surrounds the pillar with walls.
