I know I could easily google this question, but I want an answer from those who have or built one.
What is a NAS? All I know is it means Network Attached Storage, a sort of private local file server. Sounds simple and logical. Why is it then that I often see on reddit and on /g/ people discussing building NASes with massive amounts of ram (>32 for example), powerful cpus and gpus? Wouldn't lots of storage and a fast NIC suffice? Why would a machine whose only purpose is to stream data locally need high computational power? Why can't you build a NAS out of an old laptop with a free usb3.0 port, a hub and lots of external drives?
What does Anon use his NAS for?
