Should I watch out for knowing the general culture of antiquity in understanding the very old works? I know there is some important context to those, especially regarding theological texts like the Old and New Testaments, but I don't know how relevant that information is to understanding them.
I've tried a few books so far but the one that gave me the most trouble was Les Miserables. There were huge injunctions of historical references that went over my head, I could get the general gist of the themes but I felt like there was a lot I was missing. Most books have similar issues but are less pronounced.
