>>891222Sho is slightly averse to the idea; he's not ethically opposed to killing for food, but is a bit squeamish about doing it himself. He's also nervous about firearms. So John takes him out to the gun range and teaches him all about gun safety, drilling the Four Rules into him, and then teaches him the basics of marksmanship before handing him a .22 rifle. Sho does poorly at first, but begins to gain confidence as he gradually improves and discovers that plinking is actually really fun.
They return the .22 rifle to John's parents' house and head back to campus, and Sho says he had a really good time at the range. John is glad, and says next time Sho can try a 'real' gun. Sho is still nervous, but also surprised to find himself looking forward to it.
They make subsequent trips to the gun range, with Sho getting to try an AR-15 (after briefly freaking out over the legality of having one), a bolt-action hunting rifle, a pump shotgun, and a 9mm pistol. Sho also sweats bullets when a cop walks up, thinking they're going to be in trouble... but the cop just sets up in the lane next to them and starts shooting. It becomes a point of pride for Sho that he's more accurate with John's pistol than the cop is.
