I'd look mostly at turn-based games, like X-COM.
>>875263>>875272Seconding HOMM III (do NOT get the Steam version), which is turn-based, and Ghost Trick, which is simple enough to pause. The caveat being that they both have great soundtracks that set the atmosphere, so I'd recommend at least a little volume.
