Math rock is my favorite genre of music. There are many variations of it; some that fall towards progressive rock, metal, and complete absurdity; however, I particularly really like the jazzy ones. What makes math rock special are its characters characterized by complex, atypical rhythmic structures (including irregular stopping and starting), counterpoint, odd time signatures, angular melodies, and extended, often dissonant, chords defined by wikipedia.
What I love the most about math rock is that it allows for very dynamic emotions to be explored. A great example is Toe's Goodbye
