Honestly man I started with /mu/ and /mu/core isn't that advanced. Refer to pic related; I would start with Neutral Milk Hotel, Radiohead, My Bloody Valentine, The Flaming Lips, King Crimson, and Weezer.
I've been using /mu/ for a while now and there's plenty of entry level stuff. I also recommend using
last.fm to keep track of what you listen to and get automatic recs, and also use
rateyourmusic.com to browse specific genres and stuff like that.
