I really loved the mystery of the kids, the school, the world. There was also quite a good moral issue posed at the end and the show went about it quite well (though there are a few flaws). I think you will love this show for the same reasons you did MIA.
That said, it is a bit slow to start and doesn't exactly pick up until halfway so I'd suggest watching an episode now and then rather than all in one go.
