[6] Star Control II / Ur-Quan Masters
Star Control II had its 30 year anniversary recently, and it was really shocking to see how many modern /v/ users have never heard of this game. It's a space exploration/adventure game and is widely considered to be one of the best PC games of all time. It absolutely DOES hold up even after 3 decades. Its brilliance is in its writing, voice acting and music; the game has some of the best alien species concepts I've ever seen in fiction, period. Brilliant lore, witty dialogue, great story with really cool and unexpected twists. It's what the first Mass Effect wished it could be.
The best part is that the devs released the source code back in the 2000s, so you can just download and play the modern remake called The Ur-Quan Masters. It's free! Get the HD version if you want, some people shit on it but I think it looks fine.
The only downside is the combat. It's fun if you're into these space arena games, but an absolute chore if you can't deal with arcade controls. Thankfully combat is only like 5%-10% of the game, and the modern remake comes with a "robot mode" which has the computer play in for you.
PROTIP: Play with a notebook or a text document open in the background, and keep a log of things. The game does not hold your hand and you will be expected to keep your own journal or "quest log".
