>>1278769>how can you have standards!?!?! AND uphold them! The crux of the shaft/kyoani thing is that kyoani have super pretty expensive animation, but their writers are all shit. When they're not deliberately trolling their audience with stuff like Endless Eight, they deliver boring safe reset-button franchise stuff like chu2 and yuribaitphonium. You never see character development in anything by kyoto animation, because they're afraid to commit to anything. They write like they're doing The Simpsons: create a bunch of broad-strokes characters, and don't do anything too drastic to change the dynamics, or a hypothetical viewer who skips from episode seven to episode seventy (which they never make) will get confused. There's two formulas for a kyoani story, either "no character development", or "character development in episodes 6-10, that's completely reversed in episodes 11-12". It feels like such a kick in the nuts being tricked into watching a kyoto animation story only for them to end it with "none of this mattered lol", that's why there's so much hate for it.
