i'm with the line of thinking, that music itself is not haram but it is music's association with intimate dancing, drunkeness, etc.
i think the quran makes a mention of people engaged in "idle talk" (interpreted as singing) will be punished because it brings you off from allah's path, with the drinking and the dancing and the sex, etc. if you worship allah through music, would this be haram?
having said this, interpretation of the quran is very tricky because it's a very old text and some things get lost in translation
