Dunno about Imessage, seems it's locked to the apple ecosystem, beside text messages you messaging app will be a matter of where your family and friends are, I use whats app and discord for example.
Dunno about the golden standard of android phones but everyone in my family uses motorola, I have had my motorola z2 for like 5 years and I haven't found a reason to upgrade.
