However I can still empathize with him, just not as strongly as Shinji.
The other issue I have with CG, which is larger than the realism of the MC is that CG's story never grounds itself. It needs to constantly escalate in order to wow the viewer.
CG make an attempt to make the school the place they ground to, but then shit always has to go wrong at least once in an episode.
In NGE, Misato's apartment and school scenes are used to create a base level of activity and create a normal atmosphere until the next angel comes and shit goes wrong.
Ultimately this allows NGE to be more about a story of people and not of eternally escalating mech battles which, in my opinion, was too drawn out in CG.
