Not much people want to look at (let alone buy) paper sketches.
There are cheap drawing tablets these days and Krita is free. You don't even need to pirate Photoshop.
For another, they draw fanart of characters from franchises people care about. That allows them to tag their art as such, which makes it easier for fans of these franchises to find the fanart, and for the artist to build a following.
In comparison, what you draw is mostly generic things and unnamed characters that nobody care about. If you could start a webcomic and flesh out a fictional universe, people could start caring about it.
