I agree with you regarding Ghibli, but for the same style I'd recommend Miyazaki's Castle of Cagliostro. Great visuals and the rest isn't compromised (a lot of his later work have pretty mediocre plots and characters).

I like Bakemonogatari and Mawaru Penguindrum's backgrounds and visuals too, but that's a completely different aesthetic as well
