Drivers have nothing to do with this, because the OS needs to receive a device descriptor before it can hand off to any specific driver. Messing with drivers for the device will not solve this (drivers for the host controller might).
If this were my microphone, I'd try it through a powered hub. Failure to successfully send the second packet a device is expected to send suggests a power problem, particularly if the same device and wire work (or at least are detected) in another computer.
