Eva was never a unique show. Its a generic mecha show. Even more so than most mecha & gundam shows in general. It wasn't popular because it was different. Eva is a show that wears its influences on its sleeves. Some fans even call it a rip off of ideon (1982) & v gundam (1993) due to having similar ideas, characters, plots and themes.
Also eva & gundam are not deconstructions of super robot shows ether
