Something that would have probably been exactly what you wanted if it stayed good is Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team. Unfortunately, after episode 4, the director died and it really shows because everything good about those first 4 episodes is never seen again, outside of the amazing animation. It's a real shame, the first 4 episodes are seriously 10/10.
