Sorry for keeping this alive, I just need this thread for help every step of the way. This problem seems more complicated than what I have encountered previously and my paranoia is rising as well.

I've only had brief experience with Raspbian, and I read somewhere that Ubuntu is too dangerous as a live environment as it might write over the drive. Using this video as a guide in addition to the useful wiki link posted earlier.

I know the disk is 10 years old and the oddities kept on getting more and more (explorer.exe started crashing loops about a week ago), but having this all triggered by safe mode is really strange.

I would CHKDSK, but the partition (F:) as RAW won't help. SFC /Scannow is maybe the only function I haven't tried yet but I am scared to do so.
