My proposal, found out exactly what model of laptop you have, and do whatever you can to find what wifi chipset it has (Google a teardown guide or pictures of it, and look for a little rectangular plug-in-board, sort of like a ram stick) Then go to the Ubuntu help forums, when you are confident about the make and model of the wifi hardware, and ask the community to help you sort out a driver. If you don't know what kind it is, you'll get little to any help, because it can't be answered in a single post then.
