The anime came out in 2002 (12 episodes).
The sequel series came out in 2006 (another 12 episodes).
There's also a 5-episode OVA that came out in 2010.
I'm just throwing out the numbers here because I haven't read the manga, but by those numbers alone I see "read the manga" as an obvious answer.
