Beyond even that point, you can appreciate Touhou a whole lot without touching the games and without being a secondary. The novels and short stories, as well as the soundtracks and the manga are all made or mostly made by ZUN.
It's just that the Touhou Project community in general is going through something of a rough patch right now with a lot of secondaries flooding in through merchandise, mobile games and memes who are refusing to touch anything made by ZUN, which is really frustrating for diehard fans. It's driven us to be even more defensive and insular than we normally are.
We're also just horny in general; Touhou fans are more fucked up sexually than Sonic fans, we're just less public about it than they are. It's just part of who the community is at this point.
