Could be. China (PRC) has counterfeits of bascially anything that can be sold for a profit. This includes fake external hard drives which will have a large thumb drive inside and a controller which is rewritten to make it look like a 1 or 2 TB drive. The thumb drive basically beoomes a FIFO queue storage so it will pass cursory testing.

A Made_in_China brand could actually just have multiple USB thumb drive innards mounted onto a circuit card to create the same storage capacity and it would fool a lot of USA customers.

SSD should NOT be used for torrenting or other operations that have a huge huge huge amount of churning. The sheer number of bytes (and thus ssd memory cells) churning wears them out. If you torrent, move the active torrent files and its cache to a normal CMR hard drive. Don't use an SMR hard drive for your system drive.

CMR - conventional magnetic recording
SMR - shingle magnetic recording

As for SSD not meeting what you read in reviews, the makers could have done a bait and switch on them as exposed by Linus Tech Tips:
