Everything I rec'd is an 8/10 or above for me, my personal favourites would be Tylor, Kaiji, Takarajima, Joe, Gunsmith Cats, Gunbuster, Nadia, and Ping Pong, if you'd want a more refined choice. Pic related is good as well, just pick one at random and watch.

Here's a recommendatino chart made only to cover pre-2000. It intentionally excludes some of the more popular anime because people are assumed to already have seen them.
Be a bit careful though, the charts includes some trash anime as well.

You can look into World Masterpiece Theater, it's a series of anime that are adaptations of classic literature. Heidi is one of them, but supposedly the best one is Akage no Anne. I've also heard good things about Romeo no Aoi Sora.
However, I haven't seen any of the WMT anime, so what I say is just rumors and reputation.
