Post recommendations for bittersweet, melancholy, or just downright depressing and sad manga. So far I've read:
>Boys on the Run
One of my absolute favorite stories of all time, the emotional ride was amazing, and even the antagonists are sympathetic and it's hard to not take their side a lot of the time.
>I am a Hero
Amazing manga, same author as BotR, but the zombies and general sci-fi world made it slightly less impactful. Still a really great zombie story that doesn't pull very many punches with tragedies happening to the characters.
>Oyasumi Punpun
Almost as good as BotR. The only problem was that the author tried to make it a little too edgy at times in regard to the rape and incest, and I feel like a few of those instances could have been removed without hurting the story at all. Still, a fantastic read.
>A Girl on the Shore
Same author as Punpun, but nowhere near as good. This one just kinda seemed like depression porn, and didn't hit nearly as hard. You didn't really wanna root for any of the characters to succeed, and so it was just bad things happening to people you don't give a shit about.
>Elfen Lied
It was honestly hard to get through this one because of the art. I watched the anime as a kid and it's what turned me on to sad anime/manga, but I don't see how it achieved "cult favorite" status with how crappy the manga looks. The ending isn't bad in the manga, but the anime cuts it off in a way that feels better.
What sad manga does /wsr/ like? I'm thinking about starting The Flowers of Evil, but I may also reread Punpun honestly. /a/ had a big gay fit when I posted this thread over there, so I deleted it.
